Shanghai Stock Exchange
The Shanghai Stock Exchange was originally founded as the Shanghai Sharebrokers' Association in 1891. This association is known as the first stock exchange in China. In 1904, the Shanghai Sharebrokers' Association was renamed as the Shanghai Stock Exchange. In 1929, the Shanghai Chinese Merchant Exchange and the Shanghai Securities & Commodities Exchange merged with the Shanghai Stock Exchange to form a consolidated entity. The Shanghai Stock Exchange has had to close down twice as a result of the Japanese occupation and the Communist revolution. The Shanghai Stock Exchange was opened again in 1990 and has operated continually since then.
The headquarters of the SSE is located in Shanghai, China. This is the fifth largest stock exchange in the world in terms of market capitalisation, and the largest stock exchange in mainland China. At the end of 2007, the Shanghai Stock Exchange listed 860 companies. These companies combined for a total market capitalisation of nearly RMB 27 trillion. With all of its achievements, the Shanghai Stock Exchange holds numerous records for mainland China stock exchanges. There are numerous indexes used in the Shanghai Stock Exchange. These include the Shanghai Stock Exchange 180 Index, the 50 Index, and the Composite Index. The Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index is the most commonly used of the three indexes.
