Moscow Stock Market (MICEX)
The Moscow Stock Market or the Moscow Interbank Exchange (MICEX) is also known as the Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange (MICEX). Opened in 1992, the Moscow Stock Market is the main stock exchange of Russia. It was not until 1997 that non-government securities trading was launched on the Moscow Interbank Exchange. In 2007, the Moscow Stock Market recorded over 4 billion US dollars in total trading volume, with a daily average of 17 billion US dollars. This translated to a total turnover of over 90% of the Russian Stock Market. Ranked 17th overall in the world's top stock exchanges, the Moscow Stock Market is the largest stock exchange in Eastern Europe.
The Moscow Stock Market is the first and biggest trading floor in the country. Aside from analysing the stock market, the Moscow Stock Market is responsible to the regulation of membership admissions, information dissemination, and assures fair trading grounds and competition. There are numerous indices used by the Moscow Stock Market. The most widely used index is the MICEX Index, which is capitalisation-weighted. Other indices include the MICEX 10 Index, the MICEX Technical Index and the MICEX Corporate Bonds Index (MICEX CBI). Trading is carried out through the MICEX SE Trading System. The three largest companies listed on the Moscow Interbank Exchange are Lukoil, Rosneft and Gazprom.
