Volatility Delivers Heaven and Hell For Day Traders

Wednesday April 15, 2009

Good traders know that all types of stock markets present different options and opportunities, but it is the disciplined traders that survive, especially in tough and unpredictable times. Day traders have been experiencing this first-hand over the last year especially as the stock market dishes out its fair share of heaven and hell.

While stock market volatility can certainly cause pain for short-term traders, we can't really complain as it is the same spikes and dives that allows day trading to exist. The successful traders have been able to use the volatility of the last year's markets to their advantage in this way, and many have shown handsome profits.

One tool day traders use to take advantage of volatile markets are derivatives such as CFDs, options and futures. While these tools undoubtedly contain more risk than standard stocks and shares, skilled day traders use them to minimise loss, trade declining markets and take advantage of price swings.

Percentage-wise, it's the long-term investors that show the most success in trading on the stock markets, but utilising fresh software tools and an increasing awareness of information on the stock market ensures there are day traders out there still proving the viability of short term trading.

One thing is for sure, discipline and a solid trading strategy is paramount to express, and that's especially true in the volatile markets we find ourselves in currently.
